Welcome to Calabash Charter Academy Library!

Learning to read, reading to learn or reading for pleasure, our Calabash Library Media Collection offers a wide variety of material to support your student’s curricular needs.   We aim to develop an appreciation of literature and teach students how to become independent information seekers; skills that will ensure a lifetime of learning.

Story time and library media skills instruction (ref: State Board of Education Library Literacy Standards), are important components of weekly visits for all grades*.

At recess and lunch we encourage quiet reading, research, activities such as chess and puzzles, with an after-school homework club available for grades 2nd-5th.  Kindergarten and first grade students are welcome after school but must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Books may also be exchanged at this time.

Some of our favorite annual events include author visits, spooky stories for Halloween, Book Fair (during Open House), the ‘Great Paperback Book Swap’ and ‘Read Across America’s’ Dr. Seuss Birthday celebration. And, speaking of birthdays, why not purchase a book from our Library’s Birthday Book program? Choose from our Birthday Book Box for a $20 donation. Your child’s chosen book, complete with special donation plate, will be part of our collection for years to come! Birthday pencils are also available - purchase one for each class member to celebrate the special day!

Read to/with your child as often as possible. Apart from major academic benefits, reading promotes empathy, imagery, patience and a glimpse into the worlds of others that otherwise would not be seen or experienced. Sharing the ‘whole novel’ is a trip taken together for little cost but great reward.

Feel free to visit after school if you have questions or just to say hello.

*Students are required to have on file, a signed, ‘Permission to Check Out Books’ slip (Education Code 48904), before borrowing from the Library Media Center.
